Visitors to the site may be surprised to find fan fiction titles for sale here. Wait a minute, you might think. You can’t copyright or sell fan fiction. What’s going on?
That’s exactly right: you can’t copyright the entire work, or sell it for profit. That constitutes copyright and/or licensing infringement, and more than that, it’s just plain rude. I’m well aware of that and I even agree with both, because I understand the reasons why — and I want to see more official merchandise from my favorite universes!
That said, there are some things you can do with fan fiction. The important part is not to infringe on the original intellectual property holders’ rights. As long as you do that, you can copyright the original portions of the work. And you can usually sell it as a fundraiser. That’s what we’re doing on this site, and further, we’re not pretending anything otherwise.
