Please pardon us as the dust settles on our brand new web site!
Contentnea Creek Books is an independent press based in eastern North Carolina. We’re here to publish stories that entertain, inspire, and occasionally ask difficult questions. Our current projects include science fiction, romance, historical fiction, and even some nonfiction works.
As of this writing, we’re based out of Farmville, a little town that’s west of Greenville and (well) east of Raleigh and I-95. We don’t expect that to change anytime soon, but “never say never!”
But even if it did, the name wouldn’t change. The press is named for the Contentnea Creek, a major tributary of the Neuse River. It runs from Wilson to Grifton, passing by Farmville on the way.
The word, which is pronounced with the accent on the second syllable, is believed to derive from a Tuscarora (Skarù·ręʔ) term meaning “fish passing by.” Contentnea Creek certainly lives up to that name; it’s known for some of the best fishing in the local area. It’s also known among paddlers, and it’s an excellent shorthand way of referring to the immediate area.
Even if we relocated, we’d keep the name to honor our roots and to acknowledge those who first lived on this land. More on that in a future post.
Most of our titles will be available in ebook and print formats through a wide variety of retailers and libraries. While our genres may vary, we’re especially interested in stories with memorable characters, strong senses of place, and themes that linger after the final page. Whether we’re publishing science fiction set among the stars or stories rooted here in eastern North Carolina, our goal is the same: to share books worth spending time with.
Stay tuned for future updates!
